Ashtanga is a fixed sequence of athletic postures that are practised in a fixed order. There is a primary, secondary and advanced version and students master one series before they take part in the next. The classes we have at the studio are all primary series. Ashtanga and Vinyasa have breath centred movement. In an Ashtanga class a pose would be practiced on the right side then immediately the left side follows which gives a good feeling of balance.

Ashtanga does not use music and is the most traditional style of yoga practice. Ujjayi breath is used (breathing through the nose but constricting at the throat to make a rasping noise). There is an equal focus between movement, stretching and holding postures. This method of yoga involves synchronizing the breath with a progressive series of postures—a process producing intense internal heat and a profuse, purifying sweat that detoxifies muscles and organs. It’s method turns static poses into a dynamic flow with hands on adjustments. The result is improved circulation, a light and strong body and a calm mind. All levels welcome. A beginners' Ashtanga class is also available on the timetable.
